Durban, Johannesburg and Cape Town all read the same clock. South Africa runs on SAST (South African Standard Time), a fixed UTC+2 offset that never shifts. No daylight saving, no seasonal clock changes, no exceptions. The IANA zone identifier covering every address in the country is Africa/Johannesburg. There is no Africa/Durban zone and no Africa/Cape_Town zone.

Time across South African cities: all the same

Every city in South Africa shows identical clock time. The country spans roughly 14 degrees of longitude, so sunrise and sunset vary, but the number on the clock does not.

City Time zone Offset
Durban Africa/Johannesburg UTC+2 year-round
Johannesburg Africa/Johannesburg UTC+2 year-round
Cape Town Africa/Johannesburg UTC+2 year-round
Pretoria (capital) Africa/Johannesburg UTC+2 year-round
Bloemfontein Africa/Johannesburg UTC+2 year-round
Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha) Africa/Johannesburg UTC+2 year-round

Durban sees the sun rise and set earlier than Cape Town. The clock does not care.

Why South Africa uses one time zone

South Africa adopted a single national time zone for coherence across a large territory. The country trialled daylight saving time during World War II and again in the 1970s. Both experiments ended after strong opposition from the agricultural and mining sectors. No DST proposal has gained legislative traction since.

One zone, one offset, no seasonal confusion. When the gap between Durban and London shrinks from 2 hours to 1 hour in July, the change comes entirely from British Summer Time. Durban does not move.

Quick reference: SAST vs major world cities

The differences below use Durban (SAST, always UTC+2) on two dates in 2026. All variation comes from the other city's DST.

15 January 2026 (Northern Hemisphere winter, no DST in Europe or the Americas):

City Difference from Durban
New York 7 hours behind
Los Angeles 10 hours behind
London 2 hours behind
Paris 1 hour behind
Dubai 2 hours ahead
Mumbai 3.5 hours ahead
Singapore 6 hours ahead
Tokyo 7 hours ahead
Sydney 9 hours ahead
São Paulo 5 hours behind
Chicago 8 hours behind

15 July 2026 (Northern Hemisphere summer, DST active in Europe and the Americas):

City Difference from Durban
New York 6 hours behind
Los Angeles 9 hours behind
London 1 hour behind
Paris Same time
Dubai 2 hours ahead
Mumbai 3.5 hours ahead
Singapore 6 hours ahead
Tokyo 7 hours ahead
Sydney 8 hours ahead
São Paulo 5 hours behind
Chicago 7 hours behind

Paris moves from 1 hour behind in January to equal time in July. That is Paris changing its clocks. Durban stays put.

What time does the sun rise in Durban?

Durban sits at 29.9°S. Daylight varies by about 3 hours 51 minutes between the solstices. On 21 June 2026, the winter solstice, Durban gets 10 hours 13 minutes of daylight: sunrise at 06:50, sunset at 17:03. On 21 December 2026, the summer solstice, it gets 14 hours 4 minutes: sunrise at 04:51, sunset at 18:55. The March equinox (20 March 2026) brings 12 hours 10 minutes, with sunrise at 05:59 and sunset at 18:08. The September equinox (22 September 2026) delivers 12 hours 5 minutes, sunrise at 05:46, sunset at 17:50.

Solar noon in Durban hits around 11:48 SAST. The city lies slightly east of the 30°E meridian that anchors SAST, so the sun peaks before the clock strikes twelve.

Standard office hours run 08:00 to 17:00, Monday to Friday. Lunch is 13:00 to 14:00. Shops typically open at 09:00 and close by 18:00 on weekdays, with shorter hours on Saturday and 09:00 to 14:00 on Sunday at major malls. Schools start between 07:30 and 07:45 and finish between 13:30 and 14:30. Construction and outdoor trades often begin at 06:00 or 07:00 in summer to avoid midday heat.

When do Durban's clocks trip up international callers?

The most common trap: assuming South Africa observes DST. It does not. Some online world clocks misconfigured for South Africa show a UTC+3 offset in July. That is wrong. If a meeting planner displays Durban at UTC+3 during any month, discard it.

Remote workers and call centre teams in Durban serve clients across the UK, the US and Australia. The best overlap with London is 09:00 to 17:00 SAST, year-round. With New York, the window is tight: 15:30 to 17:00 SAST in Northern Hemisphere winter, narrowing further in summer. With Sydney, the only practical overlap is 07:00 to 09:00 SAST. With Los Angeles, there is no overlap during standard business hours on either date. With São Paulo, Durban stays 5 hours ahead all year, no seasonal shift to track.

Another edge case: the IANA zone name. Software asks for Africa/Johannesburg even when the location is Durban or Cape Town. Searching for Africa/Durban returns nothing. Select Johannesburg and move on.
