South Africa public holidays 2026: the full list
South Africa recognises 12 official public days in 2026. One falls on a Sunday, which triggers the observance rule: the paid day off moves to Monday.
| Date | Day | Observance |
|---|---|---|
| 1 January | Thursday | New Year's Day |
| 21 March | Saturday | Human Rights Day |
| 3 April | Friday | Good Friday |
| 6 April | Monday | Family Day |
| 27 April | Monday | Freedom Day |
| 1 May | Friday | Workers' Day |
| 16 June | Tuesday | Youth Day |
| 9 August | Sunday | National Women's Day |
| 10 August | Monday | National Women's Day (observed) |
| 24 September | Thursday | Heritage Day |
| 4 November | Wednesday | Local Government Elections |
| 16 December | Wednesday | Day of Reconciliation |
| 25 December | Friday | Christmas Day |
| 26 December | Saturday | Day of Goodwill |
Two dates to flag for 2027 planning: Human Rights Day falls on Sunday 21 March 2027, so the observed day moves to Monday 22 March. Day of Goodwill falls on Sunday 26 December 2027, observed Monday 27 December.
The Sunday observance rule explained
A public day that lands on a Sunday is taken on the Monday. That Monday becomes the official day off for workers, businesses, schools and government offices.
In 2026 this affects one date: National Women's Day (Sunday 9 August) is observed on Monday 10 August.
The rule does not apply to Good Friday, Christmas Day or any date that already falls on a weekday. The government publishes the list annually in the Government Gazette, and the Monday observance is legally binding for the purposes of the Public Holidays Act.
School holiday terms for 2026
The South African school year runs from mid-January to early December. Schools divide the year into four terms separated by three breaks. These dates are set by the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education and apply to public schools in Durban.
- Summer break: December, January (peak domestic tourism season)
- First term break (April): Around two weeks, often aligned with Good Friday and Family Day
- Winter break (June, July): The secondary tourism peak, about three weeks
- Spring break (September, October): Around one week, often overlapping Heritage Day
School holidays drive hotel rates, traffic on the N3 and beach crowds. If you are planning travel within Durban or to the KZN coast, book accommodation early for the June-July and December-January windows.
How public holidays affect business hours in Durban
On a public day, most businesses close. Banks, post offices, government offices and many retail stores do not open. Shopping malls typically operate reduced hours, often 09:00-14:00 or 09:00-15:00, but check individual mall schedules.
What stays open: Petrol stations, convenience stores at petrol stations, some pharmacies, and emergency services. Restaurants and tourist attractions in the Golden Mile area often operate on Sunday schedules or extended hours.
What changes: Public transport runs on a Sunday schedule. Durban Transport hours are reduced. Metrorail services are limited. Minibus taxis are less frequent.
If you run a business or manage a team, note that the Monday observance rule means a Sunday closure shifts to Monday. Plan staffing and deliveries accordingly.
Durban-specific events: Durban July and Comrades Marathon
Two major events in 2026 fall outside the public calendar but affect city operations significantly.
Durban July: First Saturday of July. This horse racing event at Greyville Racecourse is a major social calendar date. The city sees increased hotel occupancy, restaurant bookings and traffic congestion around the racecourse and the Golden Mile. Book restaurants and accommodation months in advance. See the Durban July guide for full details.
Comrades Marathon: June. The ultramarathon runs between Durban and Pietermaritzburg. Road closures affect the N3 and city routes on race day. If you are travelling on the day, check the Comrades Marathon time guide for start times and affected roads.
Planning around public holidays: travel and business tips
December, January summer break is the peak domestic tourism period. Durban's beaches, the Golden Mile and uShaka Marine World are busiest. Book accommodation by September.
June, July winter break is the secondary peak. The Durban July and Comrades Marathon fall in this window, and school holiday traffic increases. The weather is mild and dry, making it a good time for outdoor activities, but the city is fuller than in August or September.
Business planning: A public day on a Tuesday or Thursday creates a "bridge" day. Many workers take the Monday or Friday off to make a long weekend. If you need to schedule meetings or deliveries, avoid the Friday before or the Monday after a Tuesday or Thursday closure. The Monday observance rule for Sunday dates means a three-day weekend is common.
For international calls and meetings, note that Durban does not observe daylight saving time. The offset to London shifts between 1 hour (when the UK is on BST) and 2 hours (when the UK is on GMT). For business hours overlap, the best window for calls to Europe is 09:00-16:00 SAST. For the US East Coast, the overlap is narrow: 15:00-17:00 SAST.
Local Government Elections (4 November 2026): This date is a public day for election purposes. Government offices and schools will be closed. Verify the date with the Electoral Commission closer to the time.
